Introduction to Frame Weaving

Weaving is a special craft that offers makers a meditative practice to relax, play and experiment with. In this class, you’ll work with a lightweight frame loom and learn the basic and advanced techniques of frame weaving. You will learn how to set up a loom, how to work with weave structures, and numerous weaving techniques. We will explore construction, materials, making, finishing, and hanging, as well as dive into the craft of weaving in contemporary art. The class will be a combination of demonstrations, slide presentations, and guided making time. Students can expect to walk away from this class with a robust tool kit for planning and making weavings on a frame loom.

Using photos as a reference in the course, students will learn methods of translating the everyday into an exciting painting. Artists may use oil or acrylic, and we will cover basics of painting techniques including brush strokes, color mixing, layering, finding/making composition, and stretching value and light. Some painting experience preferred. Grab a bigger brush and let’s go!

You will learn the fundamentals of painting in gouache an opaque watercolor. Discovering essential techniques and practicing painting in a variety of environments. You will learn about different surfaces such as mylar, toned papers, brushes, brands of gouache, and painters that use gouache and how to apply gouache at its traditional consistency of half and half and learn how to manipulate it too. From taking this course you will inform your hand eye coordination and your drawing and painting skills will improve also.

* For the Winter 2021 session, the class format will be determined by town and state Covid-19 restrictions. It is our hope that by limiting class size and using masks, gloves and sanitizers as needed, we will provide the personal distancing and safety required for a studio experience.
