Makerspace - In Your Space

Watch a short video and follow along with the instructor to complete these exciting STEAM challenges. Most challenges involve ordinary, every-day materials, but any not-so-ordinary materials will be provided weekly along with a printed copy of the project instructions. There will also be opportunity to share projects virtually once completed. Let's learn to think outside the box! |

Beginning Drawing
Grades 3-5

Students will be introduced to an array of drawing techniques such as hatching and shading. We will also learn primary elements of art such as shapes, forms, lines, and textures. With common drawing materials (pencils, charcoal, markers, and oil pastels), students will shift between themes such as animals, houses, people, and natural elements in their environment.

Needle-felted 3D Animals
Grades 3+

Students will learn exciting needle-felting techniques to create three-dimensional animals or creatures out of different colors of soft wool roving. Using felting needles to shape woolly animal bodies with eyes, legs, ears and tails, students will build skills to bring their imaginations to life. In the end, these soft sculptures can become part of a hanging mobile piece or turn into a bigger sculpture project-- both avenues will be explored and demonstrated in this course.

In this course, students will learn a variety of decorative embroidery stitches to make a rich canvas on fabric of elements found in nature such as flowers, leaves, berries, and stars. Each student will ultimately come away with a unique design, and will be encouraged to explore the creative process by using found objects in nature to inspire their landscapes. Students will also learn different methods for hand drawing designs based on natural objects and transferring these sketches to fabric. This class will combine both basic and intermediate stitching as well as basic drawing skills; beginner embroidery/hand sewing skills recommended (tying a knot, threading needles, basic straight stitching).

Students will be able to directly show their work and receive helpful critiques from the teacher and the rest of the class. They will learn tips and tricks that will help them create anything they want!
