WINTER 2020 YOUTH AND TEEN CLASSES

Classes and Workshops begin the Week of January 6th

MONDAYS
Hand-building and Wheel, Carmela Fratus – Instructor
9 Mondays 1/6 – 3/16 (no class 1/20 & 2/17), 3:30pm – 5pm     
$207/Materials Fee: $30, Grades 4+
It takes a little getting used to but once kids learn to use the potter’s wheel they’re off and spinning.
In this class, students use the potter’s wheel and hand-building techniques to create from their
imagination while learning form, texture, pattern and glazing. This class also practices cooperation
and studio responsibilities in a relaxing, fun environment.


Theater Intensive
, Bruno Barbuto – Instructor
9 Mondays 1/6 – 3/16 (no class 1/20 & 2/17), 4pm – 6pm     
$198, Grades 2 – 6
In this skill-building class, students will be introduced to a series of skill-strengthening exercises.
Excercises will include how to audition, monologues, cold readings, and sides. There will be
scene work which will include how to develop a relationship with your character and rehearsing
voice projection. 


Beginning Drawing, Joanne Stowell – Instructor
9 Mondays 1/6 – 3/16 (no class 1/20 & 2/17), 4pm – 5:30pm     
$207, Grades 2 – 5
Students will be introduced to an array of drawing techniques such as hatching and shading,
as well as the primary elements of art such as shapes, forms, lines, and textures. With common
drawing materials (pencils, charcoal, markers, and oil pastels), students will shift between themes
such as animals, houses, people, and natural elements in their environment.


Teen Ceramics, Carmela Fratus – Instructor
9 Mondays 1/6 – 3/16 (no class 1/20 & 2/17), 5:30pm – 7pm     
$253/Materials Fee: $30, Grades 7+   
Students learn foundations of ceramics by using the potter’s wheel and hand-building techniques to
create artful and useful ceramics. Returning students work with the instructor to advance their skills
and create challenging projects. Students will practice studio responsibilities and group critique in a
non-competitive environment.

TUESDAYS
Artful Engineering: Creativity Lab, Joanne Stowell – Instructor
10 Tuesdays 1/7 – 3/17 (no class 2/18)
10:30am – 12:00pm: Ages 1.5yrs – 3yrs    ($125)               
1:00pm – 3:00pm: Ages 3yrs – 5yrs    ($146)                                             
Let your preschooler come play, explore, and create with hands-on STEAM projects. We will be using
ordinary materials to create some not so ordinary projects. A class that will help make your little
thinker a great thinker!


Kids Clay, Ellie House – Instructor
10 Tuesdays 1/7 – 3/17 (no class 2/18), 3:30pm – 5pm     
$202/Materials Fee: $30, Grades K – 3
This class allows kids to have fun and learn to create in clay. Students will learn hand-building
techniques to create functional and whimsical sculptures. This class encourages creativity and
imagination in a small group setting with individual attention.

 
Intermediate Drawing and Painting, Joanne Stowell – Instructor
10 Tuesdays 1/7 – 3/17 (no class 2/18), 4pm – 5:30pm                                                                                
$220, Grades 5 – 7
Students will continue to learn and develop essential drawing skills while also exploring different
materials. From realistic to abstract, students will learn different ways to draw both from life and
from their imagination, and then learn to transition these skills into painting. Projects include
working from a still-life, photos, self-portraits, abstract art and designs.


WEDNESDAYS

Art and Movement, Samarrah Clayman – Instructor
6 Wednesdays 1/8 – 2/12, 4pm – 5pm                                                                                      
$120, Grades K-3 
This class offers children the opportunity to express themselves through art and movement. During
the yoga component of the class, children explore playful exercises to promote focus, awareness,
and a sense of calm. Following yoga, the children create a work of art based on the themes explored
​in the yoga. This class will help to build tools the children can bring into home and school life.

Fashion Construction
10 Wednesdays 1/8 – 3/18 (no class 2/19), 4pm – 5:30pm                                          
$195, Grades 4 – 8
Learn the fundamentals of fashion construction from concept to creation. The program will cover
how to create a pattern as well as the basics of handsewing and sewing machine use. Students
will have the opporutnity to work with both fabric and materials from ArtSpan’s makerspace
workshop.


Teen Fashion Embellishment
10 Wednesdays 1/8 – 3/18 (no class 2/19), 6pm – 7:30pm                                                                                        
$197, Grades 9 – 12
Join us this fall for a class filled with trends, tapistry, and technique. Students will be taught
embroidery stitching, patchwork, and other ways to transform old clothing into something totally new!


THURSDAYS
Half Day Arts Program, Joanne Stowell – Instructor
10 Thursday 1/9 – 3/19 (no class 2/20), 1pm – 3:30pm                                     
$313, Grades K – 5
Students will enjoy a creative, fun, and relaxed afternoon making all kinds of art projects! We’ll
explore a variety of different art materials with projects designed to help kids flex their imaginations.
A light snack and camaraderie are always provided.

Cartooning
, Brendan Lehman – Instructor
10 Thursday 1/9 – 3/19 (no class 2/20), 4pm – 5:30pm
$195, Ages 11+
Learn cartooning (real or imagined) and anime. Have fun developing stories using storyboards and
other mechanisms, and practice sketching cartoon characters and developing unique stories. 


FRIDAYS
In Your Hands: Drawing & Painting Studio for Teens, Laurel Smith – Instructor
10 Fridays, 1/10 – 3/20 (no class 2/21), 4pm – 6pm                                           
$271, Grades 9 – 12
This popular class offers students who are exploring their drawing and painting skills an opportunity to
join a group where technical instruction is balanced with pursuit of independent artistic goals. We will
work with observational skills, use of expressive line, color and composition fundamentals, as well as
new techniques and materials that may be introduced or invented to support individual projects. All
media are encouraged.
