Sgraffito, meaning ‘to scratch’ in Italian, is the process of applying a slip or underglaze to an unfired piece, then carving through it to reveal the contrasting clay color beneath. After experimenting with different methods of drawing on clay this has become the primary method that Celia currently uses in her work.
"It’s simple, you can get really nice line qualities, and it feels similar to drawing with a pen on paper."
