Arts • Community • Inspiration
At the Munroe Center for the Arts we aspire to be a vibrant hub for arts education, a welcoming home for artists, a catalyst for community arts events, and a destination for arts enthusiasts.
Lexington's 1904 Munroe elementary school was repurposed as a community arts center in 1984. It currently houses ten working artists and four schools providing education and creative experiences in the arts.
Each year the Munroe Center for the Arts employs scores of teachers and staff, and brings in over a thousand students of all ages and abilities through its doors in year-long programming in music, dance, theater, and visual arts.
As well as hosting a community gallery, Munroe Center for the Arts provides affordable studio space to local artists as well as performance opportunities for local artists through its monthly performing arts series.
The Munroe Center for the Arts is Lexington's hub for creativity. In addition to classes and workshops, we provide 11 weeks of school vacation camp during the year.
Outside the building we work to bring art to the community though initiatives such as the Patriots' Day parade and Artwalk community art exhibits. Likewise, Munroe Center for the Arts frequently forms collaboration initiatives with local organizations such as LexPride, Chinese American Association of Lexington, LABBB Collaborative, and Ascentria Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program.
The Lexington Friends of the Arts dba Munroe Center for the Arts is a 501(c)(3) organization.
