David Hummon is a poet, painter, and emeritus Professor (Holy Cross College, Sociology),
educated at Columbia (B.A.) and U.C. Berkeley (Ph.D.). As an academic, he taught and wrote
about the American landscape, identity, and visual culture, as well as curating exhibitions at the
Cantor Art Gallery (Holy Cross) and the Worcester Art Museum.
During the last decade, he has studied poetry with Jessie Brown and other area poets and in the
MFA program at Lesley College. He has published recent work in The Bicoastal Review, The
Healing Muse, and The Naugatuck River Review. A serious watercolor painter, he has developed
his craft through various programs (e.g., MassArt, Boston; Art New England, Bennington
College) and worked with various painters, including Kathleen Jacobs and Lucy MacGillis.
Much of his recent work focuses on joining poetry with art through ekphrastic poems about art,
crafting art to interpret poetry, and by creating work that combines image and text in a single
piece. He enjoys sharing his enthusiasms with poets, artists, and others who wish to use creative
work to engage their world.
