Figure Drawing Studio

Gelli-Plate Printing

This class welcomes students to dive into the world of gelli-printing. This method is fun and simple, and a beginner-friendly introduction to printmaking without a press. Students will learn how to utilize these flexible plates by layering paints/inks and textured materials in their art. Experiment with cut-out shape, pressed plants, fabrics, and more to create multiples of each unique composition. All experience levels welcome. The printmaking studio utilizes non-toxic materials; though this class does not utilize the press itself, we ask all students to review the printmaking studio guidelines ahead of their first class in the space.

Every-day views can become wonderful inspiration for new art - join this class to utilize nature photos as a basis for painting! By using photos as reference material, students will develop a color palette, composition, and style. In addition, this class will introduce methods of paint application that build layers and textures seen in nature - this leads to a final piece that is expressive and unique from the source material. This class is ideal for acrylic or oil painters with some experience, and students are encouraged to bring their own photos as references. The required materials list is available here.

Students will begin with hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of linocut printmaking, through carving methods, color mixing, and instructor-led press operation. By utilizing only three colors, students can be mindful of color theory and how to build a dynamic composition in their resulting prints. Ideal for students with some printmaking experience.

Drawing is considered to be the foundation of all artistic practice, with line work essential to effectively capturing what we see in front of us. Through drawing techniques like cross-hatching, students will build up foundational skills and gain confidence in how they approach the process of drawing throughout the semester. This class will introduce both the approaches of artists throughout history, as well as fun, gesture-based warm-ups as a foundation. Then, students will develop their observation skills by working with set still-lifes, occasionally utilizing red chalk, dry brush techniques, and more.
